Is Mobility Scooter Insurance a legal requirement?
At the time of writing this, there are no laws that make insurance for Mobility Scooters compulsory. That said, mobility scooter insurance can offer protection and peace of mind for many people. Without mobility scooter insurance, you may be liable for any damages that are caused by your scooter, either to people or to their property. For more information on this, please see the Government website, where up-to-date information can be found on this issue.
Whilst Mobility Scooter Insurance isn’t a legal requirement, here are 6 reasons why you need Mobility Scooter Insurance.
How much does Mobility Scooter Insurance cost?
The amount of the insurance costs will vary from company to company and policy to policy. Our mobility scooter insurance starts from £46 and we can add key insurance, puncture insurance and breakdown cover and recovery services if you would like these too. Is my Mobility Scooter covered in my home insurance?
You would have to check your individual policy documents for your home insurance to be certain what you would be covered to do. If your scooter is listed in your contents, you may be able to claim in the event of theft or a fire, if it is located at the property at the time of the incident. You would probably not be covered for any damage caused by the scooter to others or property, or damage to the scooter while you are out and about though.
Who can ride my Mobility Scooter?
With our Mobility Scooter policies, you can give permission to other people to ride the scooter and they will be covered (with some restrictions), as the insurance is for the scooter, not the user. There will be some responsibility for you though, as you must be sure that the person is capable of operating the vehicle and meets the requirements for being allowed to use one. Do I need to service my Mobility Scooter?
There aren’t currently any requirements for this in the way that a car has an MOT but most insurance policies for mobility scooters will insist upon regular maintenance and that the scooter is in good working order. If it does not meet those requirements, you may invalidate your policy. If you need repairs made to your scooter, you should be able to find a reputable mechanic locally.
Do I need to pass an eyesight test to get my Mobility Scooter?
There is no test to take but you should make sure that you can see and read a licence plate from 12.3 metres (40 feet) away. If it is discovered after an accident that you could not do this, you may be liable to pay compensation and it could invalidate your insurance.
Can I drive my Mobility Scooter on the road?
If you have a Class 2 invalid carriage, you cannot use this on the road and it has a max speed of 4mph. If you have a Class 3 Mobility Scooter invalid carriage, this can be used on the road up to 8mph or off the road with a maximum speed limit of 4mph.
It is important to know what type of carriage you have, as you will need to make sure that any Class 3 invalid carriages are registered. See the DVLA website for more information on registering your mobility scooter.
